                Rainey Street&apos;s White House Charity Bar shuttered recently after Lustre Pearl general manager Christian Hawkins complained to TABC that there had been an increase of drunk people due to the bar&apos;s presence on the busy entertainment corridor.

				<title>Birth Notice: Goldis Sausage Company</title>
				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2013/3/29/Birth-Notice-Goldis-Sausage-Company</link>
				<description>

                Big sausage party coming next week: April 4th from Goldis Sausage Company, a new food cart on east 6th street.

It&apos;s their grand opening

Thug Passion, with Alize&#xae; liqueur and Champagne will be served along-side a wide variety of handmade sausages.

-The Goldis (formerly known as the Mustardy Beef)

-Honey-Orange-Mango

-Green Curry w/ Peanut

-Blueberry-Balsamic-Maple

-The Mac-n-Cheese Sausage!

-A Duck Fat Surprise!

Sounds a mite fancy for our old school taste buds but could be a good time.

                We&apos;ve been wondering about the transformation of Rabbit&apos;s Lounge on East 6th street for awhile now so we decided to drop in and talk with the construction crew to see if they&apos;d be willing to let us in on the project.

They were.

				<title>Birth Notice: The Rebirth Of Quickie Pickie</title>
				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2013/3/25/Birth-Notice-The-Rebirth-Of-Quickie-Pickie</link>
				<description>

                In keeping with the modern state of foodways in East Austin, the renaissance of long running curb store Quickie Pickie will feature local foods in the cafe, local beers on the tap wall and perhaps an aviary off to one side featuring only the finest local chickens?

A month or so ago we were motoring toward Rosewood Avenue when we spotted a gang of construction workers descending on the corner of East 11th and Lydia. Always curious, we popped into the old time quick mart to see what was going on with the hubbub.

                The Prague Spring-like renaissance of East Austin continues apace with bona fide craft coffee superstar Cuv&#xe9;e opening for business this morning at Salt And Time Butcher Shop.

We ran by for a moment at lunch to take a couple photos and get the lay of the land. More details to come as we are under a major time crunch due to the pop up event this weekend.

Back at it.

				<title>New Bull In The Pen. Salt And Time Ushers In New Meat Culture Appreciation Era In East Austin</title>
				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2013/2/4/New-Bull-In-The-Pen-Salt-And-Time-Ushers-In-New-Meat-Culture-Appreciation-Era-In-East-Austin</link>
				<description>

                Salt and Time Butchershop and Salumeria is doing business the right way.

Ancient curing methods are being honored; old school meat-aging techniques are being employed, and a reverence for tradition permeates their spanking-new East 7th street meat house.

Sunday afternoon, owner Ben Runkle peeled himself away from the crowds herded into the shop, for a few minutes to discuss his new business. Our talk ranged broadly as a steady line of people moved through the salumeria, eager to mow down on thick steaks, big bottles of Jester King beer and cases packed with both fresh, and salt-cured meats.

				<title>Birth Notice: Wheatsville Co-op Brand New South Austin Location</title>
				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2013/1/14/Birth-Notice-Wheatsville-Coop-Brand-New-South-Austin-Location</link>
				<description>

                For the hard partying school girls at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders life is about to get a lot easier. Wheatsville Co-op will be selling beer and wine at their new S. Lamar Boulevard location, opening in June 2013.

The Austin City Council recently voted unanimously in favor of the alcohol sales waiver that the hippies running the joint had been fight tooth and nail for.

Expect backpacks to be filled with Lagunitas starting in June for the poor young gals stuck in summer school.

                We had a great time at the friends and family, soft opening at Freedmen&apos;s in West Campus last night. No matter that we are neither, there were plenty folks who were none the wiser.

Freedmen&apos;s is a barbecue restaurant and craft cocktail bar. Let&apos;s hope University Texas students are thirsty for well made pre and post-prohibition cocktails as that is the slant of the drinkery part of the establishment.

				<title>Birth Notice: Get A Rope. Southern Hospitality Barbecue via Justin Timberlake Is Coming To Austin</title>

				<description>

                We broke the news of Justin Timberlake&apos;s plans to set up a barbecue shop in Austin way back in August of 2011.

A snippet of our original article:

Round up the posse.

We just got wind of more corporate barbecue coming to our fair city. This time we wonder if it&apos;s just a bad joke. An outfit from New York City called &quot;Southern Hospitality&quot; has announced an Austin invasion.

These days we&apos;re feeling a mite prickly.

                The foreman on the work crew informed us that &#xc9;picerie Caf&#xe9; and Market is about 2 weeks out from opening. Back in the Spring of this year the Rosedale neighborhood was roiled by controversy as the restaurant made formal its plans to open.

				<title>Birth Notice: Hi Hat Public House</title>
				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2012/12/4/Birth-Notice-Hi-Hat-Public-House</link>
				<description>

                Austin musician Steve Schrader&apos;s going into the pub business. He&apos;s set to open Hi Hat Public House in the former Braise on East 6th street.

Expect a wall filled with two dozen taps of hi-grade craft beer and a kitchen putting out careful takes on classic pub cuisine.

East Austin&apos;s hungry right now. While the neighborhood is well served with long time classic restaurants like Joe&apos;s and Dario&apos;s, til now there hasn&apos;t been a place that is mining the same territory as a Hopfield&apos;s or Drink.Well.

We expect land office business to descend upon Hi Hat Public House when Schrader flings the doors open in the next week or two.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

                Brace up Bee Cave Texas.

512 Foodie is reporting that Schmidt Family Barbecue will be opening at the Hill Country Galleria in Bee Cave in summer 2013.

No mention of how big the restaurant will be but we&apos;ll be stunned if it seats less than a 1000 people.

Kreuz Market arches upward toward a cap of 700 in tiny Lockhart Texas so we expect the new venture to dwarf that operation.

				<title>Birth Notice: Stein And Stem Prepares To Open In Former European Bistro</title>
				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2012/8/20/Birth-Notice-Stein-And-Stem-Prepares-To-Open-In-Former-European-Bistro</link>
				<description>

                Two weeks ago we penned an obituary for European Bistro, the erratic, charming cafe in Pflugerville that enjoyed a decade-plus run til one of the owners decided to move back to Hungary. The report: http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2012/8/5/RIP-Rest-In-Peace-European-Bistro

The space won&apos;t be vacant long.

				<title>The Rebirth Of An Austin, Texas Legend: Midtown Live Has Reopened</title>
				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2012/8/13/The-Rebirth-Of-An-Austin-Texas-Legend-Midtown-Live-Has-Reopened</link>
				<description>

                Racist cops. That was the charge hurled at Austin Police Department 7 years ago when, during a conflagration that destroyed Midtown Live, a worker at the club noticed &quot;Burn Baby Burn&quot; on an officer&apos;s computer screen in a squad car parked at the scene of the fire.

Austin City Council immediately tried to patch things up with a &quot;forgivable&quot; loan of 750k to the owners of the club but they couldn&apos;t even get that right and the offer was eventually withdrawn by then-city manager Toby Futrell.

                Temporary sign up in the parking lot and construction underway on the building that formerly housed a Kettle Restaurant on I-35 frontage near Oltorf. This is where I found out that Princess Diana died. I lived right behind the restaurant and walked over there for my Sunday morning fried eggs and bacon only to see the screaming headline on that morning&apos;s Statesman.

                We&apos;ll gather more information as warranted but for now It&apos;s All Good Barbecue is open for business out in Spicewood Texas.

I just realized this business is located inside the former RO&apos;s Outpost who shuttered back in the Spring of this year.

				<title>The Rebirth Of Berts Bar-B-Q In West Campus</title>
				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2012/7/18/The-Rebirth-Of-Berts-BarBQ-In-West-Campus</link>
				<description>

                Bert&apos;s Barbecue, est. 1970, is primed for a University of Texas comeback. The old school Texas barbecue house&apos;s original location burned down back in January of 2007 due to the gross incompetence of a 911 operator who responded to a concerned citizen&apos;s emergency call thusly: &quot;Dispatch: Yeah, yeah it&apos;s probably from their smoker, like where they cook the brisket.&quot;

Then a second caller rang 911.

				<title>Austin Daily Photo: Salty Sow In Soft Opening Run-Up Toward Full Service In East Austin</title>

				<description>

                We received some strong intel off the tipster button yesterday afternoon that Salty Sow was going soft last night, so we figured it was as good a time as any to walk a block and a half from the homestead, work our way through the menu and issue a report.

Didn&apos;t work out.

Walking into the old Red House Pizza, the building is unrecognizable. The rehab is incredible with soft lighting, low ceilings and a general feeling of good ambiance.

                From the old tv show Twin Peaks &quot;...if you confront the Black Lodge with imperfect courage, it will utterly annihilate your soul.&quot;

And the barista at the new coffee joint seemed so friendly too.

We&apos;re not sure what relationship Black Lodge Coffee has with the old David Lynch psychodrama Twin Peaks. Frankly, we&apos;re afraid to ask.

				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2012/4/3/Austin-Daily-Photo-Whistle-Stop-New-East-Austin-Bar-Prepares-To-Open-Near-Bennu-Coffee</link>
				<description>

                Here&apos;s an updated version of this article http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2012/4/11/Austin-Daily-Photo-Sneak-Peek-Inside-The-Wet-Whistle-At-MLK-and-Chicon?adminview=true

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Intel is scant [ but being fleshed out in comments ] but the long dormant building on the northeast corner of MLK and Chicon is apparently going to be a pub modeled after the Draught House on Medical Arts. The name being tossed around is &quot;Whistle Stop&quot;

The space is tiny so we&apos;re not sure how they&apos;ll pull off a true pub environment. The word pub gets thrown around awfully loosely in these parts. The Tigress is a fine bar for instance but is no way a true pub. Public houses offer food, are family friendly, are open 365 days a year and are the sort of place where old pensioners, toddlers, teenagers and embittered 20 somethings all take respite from the hard cold non-pub world.

We&apos;re always happy to see new watering holes pop up in our neighborhood and will report back as events warrant.

                1887.

That&apos;s all I needed to know when I first started reading about Cenote, a new cafe on Cesar Chavez in East Austin, a stone&apos;s throw from Top Dawgs, one of my favorite local dive bars.

1887 is the year the former home that Cenote occupies was built. Walking into the little cafe the first thing that hits is the smell.

                We still laugh over our one visit to Kebabalicious years back. We had the Turk with us so as we walked up to the window I leaned in and said &quot;hope you boys brought your a-game, there&apos;s a Turk about to eat here&quot;.

Priceless.

The cook looked like he wanted to run and hide and with good reason.

This ain&apos;t Turkish food.

Nor is it delicious.

But they are popular and they are about to open up right behind Rio Rita in the old palm reading house.

                For only the third time in my eating history am I so moved by the high level of cooking I&apos;ve just eaten that I feel the need to inquire as to the marital status of the chef.

First time was at Wrights Cafeteria in Knoxville, Tennessee where I ate a bowl of banana pudding so profoundly delicious that I knew I could have a very good life with the lady who&apos;d authored it.

We will hopefully have more information soon but for now, a picture of what appears to be a significant undertaking.

                There&apos;s been a lot of construction in the former flower shop between Posse East and Sao Paolo Brazilian restaurant on San Jacinto.

We walked in the other day and introduced ourselves to the two nice ladies overseeing the project.

We have a feeling we&apos;re going to be writing plenty about Rosie, the lead cook on the project and the taquera responsible for making both corn and flour tortillas from scratch daily.

				<description>

                We strive to bring our readers the best coverage of Austin&apos;s exploding food scene. We spent a couple hours this morning prowling Travis County looking for interesting photos as we continue to build our vast Austin Daily Photo archive.

Score.

Mere blocks from the scrumptious house we spotted a shiny new food trailer anchored down on the former Franklin Barbecue lot at the corner of Concordia and I-35.

                We&apos;ll be penning an obituary for El Dorado Meat Market soon enough but this article relates to the expansion of Your Mom&apos;s Burger Bar. The Cesar Chavez based burger house is coming to the eastern fringe of Hyde Park in mid February.

                We&apos;ve lost count of how many times we&apos;ve vacationed in Amsterdam. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 trips we reckon. It&apos;s a city that is fulfilling to the soul and the Dutch people rank at the top of our list when it comes to world favorites.

They&apos;re friendly pragmatists, just like the scrumptious crew.

                Husband wife team Luke and Sarah Johanson are vending soup out of a diminutive food cart over on east 7th street near El Azteca.

We haven&apos;t been able to dig up a menu online but they&apos;re all over Twitter posting their daily menu and specials.

Everything they&apos;re tweeting sounds delicious and apparently if you pull up on a motorcycle and start taking pictures you&apos;re invited to join a secret society of free soup eaters [the nice lady in the cart hollered at me to see if I wanted a free sample but I had to beg off].

Follow them here https://twitter.com/#!/TheSoupCoup

We&apos;ll be popping in in the next few days to see what all the fuss is about.

                Anybody who studied under master chef Elmar Prambs is bound to be solid Texas gold. Todd Duplechan along with wife Jessica, are rehabbing the shuttered Somnio&apos;s cafe down in the exploding Bouldin Creek neighborhood to open their Lenoir restaurant.

We like the sound of what they&apos;re proposing to serve; &quot;hot weather food&quot;. With Austin now achieving the dubious ranking of being one of the hottest towns in the Americas we need all the help we can get with our daily sustenance.

				<description>

                BREAKING NEWS! CORNER BAR OPENING DELAYED TIL WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 28TH 2011. DUE TO PERMITTING PROBLEMS WITH CITY OF AUSTIN.

We just received an email from John Flynn, one of the owners of Corner Bar relating the above.Please make drinking plans accordingly.
RL Reeves Jr

There&apos;s been a name change.

After a knock down drag out fight wherein restaurant attorney Kareem Hajjar reached down deep for a bravura performance in front of the planning commission, the bar that was to be known as Crossroads is now to be called Corner Bar.

We wrote about the controversy way back last summer when the owners of the would be business; John Flynn, J.D. Dunn and Jonah Lochlie, were having difficulty with the Zilker Park Neighborhood Association.

                Nice first days effort from Lance Kirkpatrick and crew up at Stiles Switch Barbecue in North Austin.

We see this one taking off and forming a triumverate, along with Franklin Barbecue in East Austin and John Mueller Barbecue in South Austin, of heavy hitters unlike Austin has ever seen.

Well, the wait is over. Flat Top opened today; Saturday December 17th 2011. We rolled by this afternoon and noticed the lights were powered on and there were people who appeared to be eating.

				<title>Austin Daily Photo: El Tacorrido From The Man Behind Takoba Is Open For Business On South First St.</title>

				<description>

                We&apos;ve expressed our love for Takoba on many occasions. It&apos;s heartening to see a new Mexican house doing things right and not taking the shortcuts so many joints in Austin do as their kitchens half ass it day in and day out.

El Tacorrido on north Lamar is where Jose De Loera, owner of Takoba, plied his trade for years before getting Takoba up and running.

Takoba exploded and El Tacorrido now has 3 locations up and running with the newest being a small, drive through on South First street at the corner of Oltorf.

				<description>

                Venezuelan food has returned to Austin. Back in the early double aughts there was a wonderful Venezuelan cafe on 1626 along the southern fringe of Travis county but it has long since shuttered.

We used to love to ride down there and get Patacones, a Venezuelan sandwich that is absolutely diabolical in its construction as it eschews bread, instead using fried plantains [!]. The name of the little restaurant escapes us. Readers?

				<title>Austin Daily Photo: Workhorse Bar Prepares To Open On Northern Fringe Of Hyde Park</title>

				<description>

                We&apos;re always at work.

Rolling down North Loop yesterday we spotted a brand new bar preparing to open in the old Parlor space.

Not a lot of intel out there just yet but we called a friend who lives a block away and apparently they&apos;re angling towards having 50 beers on tap.

We hated to see the Parlor go down in flames as we had some serious, beer soaked evenings there particularly during the Monday night residency of Scott Biram a decade or so ago.

Anybody with details on the new Workhorse Bar hit that &quot;surprise me&quot; button and tell us what&apos;s up.

                Vietnamese restaurants, whether they be on wheels or bound to the earth with brick and mortar, put lie to all other restaurant&apos;s food pricing. Particularly the sandwiches.

We love banh mi. We eat it all over town on a weekly basis and have figured out Austin&apos;s finest sources. One of the compelling reasons for this love is the fact that a good version is big, immensely satisfying and ridiculously inexpensive.

                When Streat, the restaurant from the team behind Mirabelle, went belly up earlier this year we knew the building wouldn&apos;t stay empty long.

Jalapeno Joe&apos;s is the new tenant. The Airport Blvd mainstay recently set up shop. Expect ridiculously cheap breakfast tacos and hamburger combos to start filling the bellies of neighborhood residents soon.

If they can tap into the St. David&apos;s Hospital work crew from just up the street they should be in deep clover.

                The counter worker has little interest in conversing. His eyes rest steadily off toward the horizon as we inquire as to what the provenance of the barbecue trailer is [Houston], who the pit boss is [a shadowy figure known only as Tony ] and what sort of wood is being burned [ oak]. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Attorneys Dan Byrne and Kevin Brown have filed suit in federal court alleging local nightclub impresario outfit Yassine Enterprises failed to pay several of their workers the federally mandated $2.13 per hour wage.

Yassine Enterprises owns multiple nightclubs, each one more nightmarish than the next. Any of these names ring a bell? Malaia, Fuel, Still, Qua, Treasure Island, and Pure. Nope, we didn&apos;t think so.

				<description>

                Back when the corner of 12th and Chicon in East Austin was as rough and tumble a neighborhood as Austin had to offer there lived a king.

Hailing from Beaumont, Texas, Reggie was at the top of the then nascent trailer movement in our town. He had several facets to his kingdom. Firstly and perhaps most significantly, there was fried catfish.

Austin&apos;s fried catfish scene has never been a strong one. Yes, there is catfish hereabouts but the culture attached to it in places like Birmingham, Alabama or Oxford, Mississippi simply does not exist.

				<title>The Grand Old Man Of Austin Food; Hoover Alexander&apos;s Getting In The Food Trailer Business</title>
				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2011/10/26/The-Grand-Old-Man-Of-Austin-Food-Hoover-Alexanders-Getting-In-The-Food-Trailer-Business</link>
				<description>

                Hoover Alexander&apos;s bona fides are fully in order. He trained under Austin icon Harry Akin at the Nighthawk back when that really meant something in this old town. This was early 70s Austin not too long after Akin had proven instrumental in putting an end to the Jim Crow laws that had plagued the South and Texas.

After nearly a decade with The Nighthawk, Alexander embarked on a journeyman style career in Austin food, working for a handful of organizations most notably Chez Fred, the predecessor to what would later become Chez Zee.

				<title>Birth Notice: Big Brotha’s Smokehouse BBQ</title>

				<description>

                We&apos;ve long maintained that what Pflugerville really needs is a barbecue house. The old days of Tuff&apos;s are long gone and the newer, old days of Trail Boss? Well, they&apos;re long gone too. Sure there&apos;s Cele Country Store on the eastern fringe but they&apos;re hardly ever open and the quality is only passable.

Which brings us to our prayers being answered. Pflugerville now has barbecue. Big Brotha&apos;s Smokehouse BBQ, which apparently has been flying under the radar for at least a little while on the edge of downtown has now set up shop on 12th street and [we hope] doing booming business.

Business [drinking and carousing] will carry us up there this weekend so we&apos;ll get photos, eat some brisket and report back long about Monday or so.

				<title>Birth Notice: Gourmand&apos;s Neighborhood Pub</title>

				<description>

                Whoever thought that Webberville Road would be the new hotspot in East Austin? With Frontier Bar&apos;s solid status as best new bar in town, La Monita preparing to re-open in 2012 and now Gourmand&apos;s Neighborhood Pub taking over the old El Lobo nightclub, well, we&apos;ve never had it so good.

We&apos;ve been in scout mode of late and have peered in the door a few times to see if we could interview an owner or manager but we&apos;ve only found workmen and the biggest bassett hound we&apos;ve seen in our entire life. Damn near 6 feet long and a good hundred pounds-if the new pub is half as impressive as that beast of a dog then the owners will be banking.

				<title>Birth Notice: La Boite</title>
				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2011/10/25/Birth-Notice-La-Boite</link>
				<description>

                Baking goddess Barrie Cullinan really put La Boite on the map. The little shipping container that could has now entered expansion mode adding a second location in downtown Austin. The first La Boite is still serving on Lamar just south of Alamo Drafthouse.

When La Boite opened they could have just as easily been a run of the mill coffee spot serving Russell&apos;s or Quack&apos;s baked goods like so many other joints that just sort of half-ass it on the sweet treat front.

                UPDATE DECEMBER 9TH 2011: SUSHI A GO GO TO CLOSE TOMORROW DECEMBER 10TH 2011. More Austin closures http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/RIP-Rest-In-Peace

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The yellow front quick mart at Manor and Alamo in East Austin has been a graveyard for food carts. We&apos;ve seen a few come and go but none was more auspicious than Sushi A Go Go. This is where French Place went we were tired of world class brisket at Franklin and/or lousy, over priced tacos at Mi Madres.

Of course business dictates where a food trailer plies its trade and apparently Sushi A Go Go was not raking in the dough as we went by one day for a Longhorn Roll and the little trailer had vanished.

No name has been given for the new business.

				<title>Birth Notice: Cover 2 Takes Over Hooters</title>
				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2011/10/19/Birth-Notice-Cover-2-Takes-Over-Hooters</link>

                Cover 3, the wildly expensive, upscale sports bar on Anderson Lane is in expansion mode. For unknown reasons their new location is to be called Cover 2 and will establish residency in a defunct Hooters on US 183 North.

Our interest in sports is limited to cage fighting, vintage pro wrestling and the occasional foray into Jai Alai [ it&apos;s Basque ] so we haven&apos;t made it by the mothership in spite of their being open for 3 or so years.

				<title>Birth Notice: Barbecue Heaven Monday October 17th 2011</title>
				<link>http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food/index.cfm/2011/10/17/Birth-Notice-Barbecue-Heaven-Monday-October-17th-2011</link>
				<description>

                Rolling through North Austin earlier today we noticed that the Northfield/Ridgetop neighborhood is set to get a new barbecue joint.

Barbecue Heaven is to be located on the Northeast corner of 53 1/2 st and Airport Blvd just north of House Pizza and Stallion Grill.

For the last few years this structure, which is approaching tumbledown, has been the host to an absolutely filthy convenient store. One of our Txoko brothers lives in the area so we&apos;ve had occasion to pop in to the little mart from time to time and have always been mortified as to the general air of malaise.

Hopefully the owners of Barbecue Heaven can renovate the building that formerly held one of the old Holiday Houses, the legendary Austin mini chain founded by Ralph Moreland [RIP].

At any rate we&apos;re hard pressed to name a barbecue joint anywhere in the neighborhood so perhaps this outfit will be able to make a go of it.

                Silver lining. We&apos;ve been moaning the blues lately like a young Bukka White over the epidemic of Austin Texas restaurant closures so we&apos;re determined to bulldoze our way through the ennui and come up with some good news for y&apos;all.

                This is part one of a new feature we&apos;re rolling out today on this site. It&apos;s a reaction to the insane amount of restaurant obituaries we&apos;ve been writing lately. It&apos;s ridiculous how many Austin Texas establishments have shuttered in the last week so we&apos;re going the opposite direction and are going to start penning short pieces on places that are just about to open, have recently opened or are in their late planning stages.
