Staring down the barrel of nearly 3 weeks without a bite of Mexican food to sustain me I had to have one final meal of tacos and it had to be of the highest possible caliber.

I knew that my time in the Balkans, Asia Minor and Northern Europe would be well spent on my global pursuit of the best barbecue but I also knew I wouldn't have access to my beloved tacos during the excursion.

Where to go in Austin for one final Mexican meal?

La Fruta Feliz on Manor Road in East Austin is putting out the best taqueria food in town right now.

Ask for totopos the moment you sit down. Even before you place your drink order. They will take handmade corn tortillas, slice them up, deep fry them, then garnish them with lard-y refried pinto beans and yellow cheese.

Douse liberally with either the red or green salsa and get down to business.

Every taco on the menu is good but the carnitas and chivo steal the show.

Wash it all down with a Sandia agua fresca. The best I've found in Austin.

Typical check here is 5-6 dollars.

  We've visited the last four of five Sunday mornings. I want to try other things on the menu, but I always end up back at the same order - chilaquiles verde and two chivo tacos.
  
  Thanks for sounding the horn on this one, it's just far enough away from the house and just hidden enough that I never would have even thought to check it out.

  I went there yesterday, per your suggestion. It's just down the street from my new house, so thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Definitely the best taqueria I've been to. Not only were the tortillas wonderful, but the meat in my al pastor was phenomenal. I'm itching to go back. This is exactly why I wanted to live on the east side! Thanks for the tip.

  On your rec 'Chef I headed there for lunch today and had two carnitas tacos, a pastor, and the barbacoa chivo. In order of excellence the pastor is tied for the best I've had in this town, as were the house made maize tortillas. The chivo was delicious and the carnitas wonderfully flavored and not sparing on the straight up fat chunks. The carnitas could be fried a bit longer for my liking. I showed the man and woman behind the counter your pic and writeup - what delightful people. great rec! That's on rotation now for sure just down from work at campus.
