Hard news coming out of San Antonio this afternoon. University of Texas grad and legendary restaurateur Chris Madrid has died at the age of 61.
His eponymous restaurant regularly polled nationally when the debate turned to best hamburger in the USA.
Madrid put his marketing degree from Texas to good use way back in 1977 when he opened his doors in a converted gas station on Blanco Road in San Antonio's mid town.
Mr. Madrid put himself on the map with a menu of signature burgers, hand cut fries and frozen margaritas.
If you're friends with somebody in San Antonio this is one of the first restaurants the locals like to take out of towners.
We need, at minimum, one annual fix of the tostada burger. Perhaps Madrid's signature meal, this burger is garnished with homemade refried beans, chips, onions and melted cheddar cheese.
It is a behemoth, particularly if you order it "macho".
Chris Madrid you will be missed.
