Sunday October 15th, 2023 at 1pm their annual parade will launch from old-school barroom Sportsman’s Corner, 2433 Dryades St.

Russell Batiste is dead at 57. The legendary Batiste family has lost a favorite son and New Orleans has lost another top flight musician whose career spanned decades. Today in the Uptown neighborhood the musical community gathered for Mr. Batiste’s home-going. This is what we saw:

2023 Prince of Wales Social Aid and Pleasure Club Second Line Route Map
Prince of Wales Social Aid and Pleasure Club was founded in 1928. By my estimation that makes the organization the second oldest in New Orleans behind Young Men Olympian.
Sunday October 8th, 2023 at 1pm their annual parade will take place in Uptown New Orleans.

Russell Batiste Funerary Second Line
Russell Batiste died on September 30th, 2023. The New Orleans-based drummer was felled by a heart attack at the age 57.
A funerary second line will be held in his honor on Tuesday October 10th departing from St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church, 2015 Louisiana Ave. at 11:15 a.m.
Memorial service precedes the second line and begins at 10 a.m.
Mr Batiste lived in LaPlace, Louisiana but earned his living in the clubs and barrooms of New Orleans.

Finally, five weeks into the fresh second line season the gods smiled upon downtown New Orleans and blessed us with a roll that did not start on the wrong side of Pontchartrain Expressway.
