We have Lightin’ Hopkins’ ‘Talkin’ Some Sense’ long-player spinning this morning. Collector? Look for LP/LPS 5001 on the Jewel Records imprint.
Stan “The Record Man” Lewis founded Jewel in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1963 at the behest of industry magnate Leonard Chess. Those early, rare, highly-collectible Jewel offerings? They were manufactured by Chess.
The Hopkins record we’re spinning came out in 1968. If memory serves we found our copy for a couple bucks at a flea market in Bessemer, Alabama. Today you should be able to hunt down a copy for about $20. That would be money well-spent.
Lightnin’ recorded this LP in a session on January 17, 1968 at ACA Studios in Houston,Texas.
Big Hopkins fan? Take a drive out through the Texas countryside and visit the old blues man’s statue in Crockett. It’s 170 miles north and east of Austin
