Joe Minter’s African Village in Birmingham, Alabama

We spent a long, rainy afternoon in Joe Minter’s yard in Birmingham recently. Mr Minter is an internationally famous outsider artist who lives in the rough and tumble Woodland Park neighborhood.

How rough? During the ramp up to our visit we were reading about Woodland Park to take the lay of the land when we stumbled upon Khalief Marquise Spencer. At 15 years of age he allegedly murdered Kenneth Davidson and Shundria Peoples as they socialized on the front seat of a Ford Taurus in the neighborhood.

We were hopeful Mr Minter would make an appearance as we ambled about his sprawling grounds but the rain must have kept him inside as we were the only ones on the property.

There are tens of thousands of handmade pieces of art on Minter’s property, and we reckoned it would take a professional photographer a solid year to thoroughly document the work of the artist. We did the best we could.
