We just heard that there will be no Ponderosa Stomp this fall in New Orleans. We fear this is the end of the long-running bi-annual festival. We are bereft.
To ease the pain we’re listening to New Orleans Stomp by King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band.
Could you imagine being in a jazz club in 1923 in New Orleans when Oliver’s band was commanding the stage?
A 22-year old cornetist named Louis Armstrong, trombonist Honore Dutrey, and the great clarinetist Johnny Dodds right up there chopping heads off with King Oliver himself.
Goosebumps just thinking about it.
