Andy Cook is a longtime competitor at the Brady Goat Cook Off

It’s a 558 mile drive from New Orleans to Brady, Texas but it’s one we make every year over the Labor Day weekend. The World Championship BBQ Goat Cook Off has been held annually in the garden spot of McCulloch County, Texas every single year since 1973. We were latecomers to the party and did not begin attending til the mid-90s.

The World Championship BBQ Goat Cookoff is Texas’ version of Mardi Gras.

Texas holds over 1,090,000 meat goats and McCulloch County is the dominant goat-producing region in the state. Eight of the top ten U.S. counties in goat inventory are in Texas.

The goat industry is long-running, and well-developed in the Lone Star.

This weekend more than 200 cooking teams from dozens of U.S states and a handful of foreign countries will crowd onto the grounds of Richard’s Park in Brady to shoot it out til only one team is left standing.

We can hardly wait.

If you go
