Thus spake Nina Simone upon first seeing young Jessica Harris at a 1970s New York City party.
Since a youth spent up north, the Queens New York native has gone on to become a prominent author, penning some 12 books on the foodways of the world.
Our favorite is ‘High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America.’ It’s wedged into our bookcase right next to Victuals by Ronni Lundy
Harris’ newest work is “My Soul Looks Back” a memoir on a life spent exploring the big city with a cohort that included James Baldwin, Richie Havens, Sam Floyd, Nina Simone, Hugh Masekela, Toni Morrison, Max Roach and Maya Angelou.
Quite the crew.
Jessica Harris is coming to New Orleans (where she owns a home) to speak and sign her new book. She’ll be at Garden District Book Shop, 2727 Prytania St., New Orleans on Thursday June 1st 2017 at 6pm
