The Order Marianites of Holy Cross nuns, established by Basile-Antoine Moreau on August 4, 1841 in in the parish of Holy Cross near Le Mans, Sarthe, France, first established a foothold in Bywater in 1848.
Nowadays the sisters are a vanishing breed as less than 200 nuns of the order exist worldwide.
Last month, an estate sale was announced at the Holy Angels Congregation Center as the property has been sold, and the 15 nuns who call the old building home will have to find new living quarters.
It’s a sad day in the 9th Ward.
Holy Angels Academy, the school on the property, shuttered 25 years ago and since then the majority of the facility has been used as low income housing for the elderly. Those people will now have to uproot themselves and find new homes as well.
Looking into the future use of the site we predict high dollar condominiums geared towards adventurous, deep-pocketed folks who don’t mind that they would be moving into a neighborhood where they will be ripe for the picking.
MCC Real Estate and Morris Kirschman & Co are rumored to be the property’s new owners but we have yet to see any legal documents on the sale, just community rumors.
