The good people behind New Orleans’ NoizeFest music party had their work cut out for them if they planned on topping last year’s showstopper. Back in Spring 2015 hundreds of desperate punks crowded into Brechtel Park on the Westbank for a day of copious drug use, hardcore liquor drinking and surfing on giant waves of droned out feedback rock.

When the skies opened up yesterday morning we had serious doubts that the big festival would even take place but our fears were allayed when we pulled up to the new venue on Port Street near the railroad tracks in the 9th Ward. What appeared to be an old auto mechanic’s shop had been repurposed into a DIY punk venue for the afternoon.

At any given time four different acts were playing simultaneously most of whom carved out their own sonic space while being just a few meters apart from one another. No matter, each act was distinct in their approach: some were openly Satanic, others inflected their work with damaged sheets of feedback while still others contented themselves with aural noodling like drug-addled hillbillies who got dropped off at the Greyhound Station in New Orleans in the 70s and never figured out how to make their way back to Kentucky.

Our favorite acts were Copscooter and fri (G) id, the former contented themselves with filtering the Brian Eno oeuvre thru Sternklang while the latter was essentially Joe Preston channeled through a pixie Satan worshipping aesthete.

“Hundreds of punks”? Seriously, MAYBE a hundred people all told, all day, and most of those were playing. Glad to see they found a place not on the freakin West Bank.
