Mitch Landrieu, the mayor of New Orleans, claims that the city needs $9.3 billion to repair the crumbling, pothole-marked streets of our city. Ride along Desire Street between Claiborne and St Claude and you’ll swear that sum will be nowhere near enough.
Fix My Streets Financing Working Group is a 13 member panel tasked with coming up with a solution to the New Orleans streets problem. They’re going to work on securing funding for our blasted, war-torn streets.
By the groups own estimate it could take 20 years for all the roadwork to be done. That’s overly optimistic. We’ve been monitoring the city’s recent work in the Upper 9th (where we live) and the quality is dreadful. The project began by using cement but they’re already reverted to their old, bad habits and have begun laying down asphalt that won’t even last for a full year.
