France Street is now a thing of beauty. The City Works Dept came through recently and tore up the old busted blacktop roadway and replaced it with foot-deep cement that will last for a good 20 years. We rejoiced.
The same Dept is currently replacing Gallier Street just a few blocks west and the project is careering towards despair as they’re pouring asphalt….to replace the shattered asphalt that’s been there for years. Blacktop might last a year or two before it’s destroyed by ground water, surface tension and subsidence not to mention the trucks and cars that tool down Gallier each day.
We celebrated when the City began the project with cement and now we cavil and wail as they revert to asphalt, a bandaid treatment at best and a waste of precious resources at worst.
