Easter Sunday dawned bright and clear and after a hard morning spent in the commissary kitchen we made our way to Leonidas for the 2015 Original Pigeon Town Steppers parade.
The P-town Steppers are in their 21st year and are one of the premiere Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs in all of New Orleans.
We rarely venture Uptown Backatown so it was a rare treat to get to visit a neighborhood that we only set foot in a couple times a year.
We’re dyed in the wool 9th Warders.
A moderate crowd of revelers was gathered in front of Avery’s Place on Willow Street where the parade was set to take off.
We immediately tried to gain entrance but the door was locked. More’s the pity as a shit-hot brass band was tearing it up inside and you could hear the clink of glassware and boisterous laughter.
We don’t like being on the outside looking in one damn bit.
Thankfully there were plenty roving cocktail bars (Igloo coolers stuffed with liquor bottles and mixers being pulled on Radio Flyer wagons)
Time to start drinking.
Eventually the doors to Avery’s Place opened and the Steppers came strutting out looking like a million dollars.
The second line was on!
One of the ladies must have been a mite pent up as she exploded out of the bar like a banshee and proceeded to let her devil dogs run free in a most delightful way.
New Orleans women are the most beautiful women on Earth.
There is simply no disputing that.
It’s a natural fact.
And we love that one of the baby beauty queens ate fried chicken on the float during the entirety of the second line.
After decamping we immediately drove to Popeye’s to avail ourselves of a fat combination box.
Unfortunately we must report that due to this being New Orleans tragedy struck the parade route.
Within an hour of the Pigeon Town Steppers passing the intersection of Green and Monroe two men were shot, one fatally.
An investigation is ongoing.
The shooting does not appear to be related to the Pigeon Town Steppers.
There is often a sombre tinge to even the most joyous of New Orleans proceedings.
We predict that the young man who lost his life will be memorialized at next year’s second line.
As the parade marched into its third hour the carousing grew ever more intense and some of the young ladies put on a virtual masters class in twerking.
The women of the 17th Ward definitely know how to get down.
All too soon the party began to wind down and we were left with nothing to look forward to but a box of hot chicken from Popeye’s and a glass of cold gin back at Scrumptious headquarters deep in the Bywater.
The 2015 version of the Pigeon Town Steppers Second Line was one of the best parties of this young year and we can hardly wait to roll with their crew again in 2016.
