The long, powerful legs, the tapered elegant fingers, the gleaming, bone white teeth, the massive pink shrimp welded onto the foot-high tiara astraddle her head: these are the signs of the Delcambre Shrimp Queen; an honor bestowed upon the most beauteous woman of Iberia and Vermillion Parishes in the great state of Louisiana. This year the queen of shrimp is Camille Delcambre, certainly a favored daughter of the community.
I would’ve loved to have been a fly on the wall of the smoke-filled room where the players and hustlers that determine the shrimp queen pageant winner were holding court.
This is Louisiana after all.
We’re coming up on the 64th edition of the Delcambre Shrimp Festival held each year just east of downtown in Delcambre.
Delcambre is in the heart of Acadiana so expect there to be a bounty of delicious foods served at the festival: Boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, barbecue shrimp, shrimp gumbo, shrimp po-boys, stuffed shrimp, shrimp sauce piquante, shrimp fudge sundae…..wait one damn minute Delcambre that’s out of order.
There will be a shrimp cook-off with a prize of $500 going to the winner.
There will also be a ceremonial Blessing Of The Fleet to ensure that the shrimp fishermen of the region have a safe and bountiful season as they sail forth to earn their families a living.
Oh and if you go please be respectful of the laws of the community and pull your damn pants up. Saggy trousers are forbidden by city ordinance. And please keep the Pitbull at respectable levels. If you want to play some loud music make sure it’s Nathan Abshire and not whatever nonsense the facebookers are blaring these days.
