6 years after surviving an assassination attempt Ronald Reagan had this to say about catfish:

“I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 25, 1987, as National Catfish Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fifth day of June, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and eleventh.”

Ronald Reagan “Appropriate ceremonies and activities” would most certainly not include what a group of young ruffians did to Captain Catfish, a besuited mascot of the catfish industry in Alabama. Wearing a giant foam catfish suit did not aid the poor beleaguered soul who was set upon by a pack of brigands at a shopping center in North Alabama.

“GET HIM”

“GET THAT CATFISH BOYS”

The man wearing the catfish suit made a break for it, but the toughs had his number and tackled him before he could make good his escape. They set upon him with fists and feet, and pummeled him as he rolled around on the ground-trapped in his giant foam suit.

It was a sad day for the catfish industry in Alabama.
