It’s official. By proclamation of the Texas lege, Fletcher Davis, an itinerant potter and cook invented the hamburger in Athens,Texas way back in the 1800s. Stories differ as to exactly when, but it’s generally believed that the august event was in or around 1896.

Davis unleashed his sandwich on the rest of America in 1904 at the St. Louis World’s Fair via his business “Uncle Dave’s Hamburger Stand.”

Of course there are naysayers.

Historian Barry Popik of Austin, Texas chiefly among them. We’ll leave that tale to be told on another day.
