We were always in the plain Rice Krispies camp.
Versatility rules when you’re a young, cold breakfast cereal gourmand, and once you commit to the cocoa there’s no going back. The “chocolate” suffuses the flavor profile of the whole bowl, and add-ons are next to impossible to integrate into the dish. Whereas, with plain Rice Krispies, the iterations are endless. A big dollop of blackberry preserves, a giant glob of peanut butter, a couple tablespoons of maple syrup; Rice Krispies provide a very nice canvas upon which a youthful palate can sketch.
A healthful blast of Rice Krispies provided an over the top secret weapon in some of our early work with milkshakes for instance.
Cocoa Krispies were invented in 1958.
In the pre-PC era of this day, an early mascot was a chimp named Jose. One imagines this early marketing effort was met by vigorous protest.
A litany of less outrageous mascots followed (Snagglepuss, who in some early commercial work turned everything he touched into chocolate!) til the trio of Snap,Crackle, and Pop settled in in 2001 and never looked back.
The long narrative of Cocoa Krispies is fraught with controversy. From racist mascots to health claims so specious they’ve been denounced by attorneys general, this “chocolate-“based cereal has lived a long life in the headlines of the cereal world.
On a sweet ramble through the world of Tumblr recently we stumbled upon this very fine sounding recipe courtesy of one Yogi Bear. We haven’t vetted it but it looks like solid cartoon bear recipe gold.
Recipe: Cocoa Krispy Logs
3 c. Chocolate chips, semi-sweet
1/3 c. Peanut butter
4 c. Cocoa Krispies
* Melt chocolate and peanut butter together over hot but not boiling water
* Add Cocoa Krispies and stir til well coated
* Press mixture into buttered 9″x9” pan
* Let “set up” til firm
Cut into bars and then get after ’em like a young Yogi Bear!
