Wild times in Lubbock.
We loaded up the Econoline earlier this year and headed west to do a catering at a big fancy party out on the plains of West Texas. After a long day of grocery shopping and prep we hit the town for a night of drinking, barbecue eating and frivolity. We hit The Spoon for a couple Cherry Bomb pitchers then drove a few blocks away to Mesquites Sports Grill and Bar aka Mesquite’s Barbecue. The brisket was nothing to get excited about but we didn’t let that deter us from raising the roof for a few hours.
Lubbockites like letting their hair down and the bars out that way oblige by adopting an all bets are off policy. It gets wild and wooly but as long as you’re not throwing punches it’s live and let live in Lubbock County.
It was nice to spend a couple days in a part of Texas where the men still wear cowboy boots, the women folk get dolled up to go to the grocery store and the beer comes ice cold and dirt cheap. We’re looking for an excuse to get back out there in 2013.
Barbecue wise we reckon the only Lubbock joint that could open here in Travis County and do big business is Tom and Bingo’s. Pit boss Tom Clanton is putting out Central Texas caliber barbecue in a tiny wooden shack in a faded shopping plaza near downtown.
His Hickory fired brisket was as good as any you’re likely to get in Taylor or Lockhart.
