In Kentucky, National Bourbon Day is much like any other day. You get up, pour yourself a glass of bourbon and go about your day’s affairs much like people in the rest of the country have their morning coffee.

Bourbon pairs really well with donuts too, oddly enough.

I’ve been slowly sipping on this bottle of Pappy Van Winkle for the past few years. I’ll pull it out for a special occasion {Hank 3 comes to town, a friend births a child, a particularly nice brisket comes off the smoker in the backyard…things of that nature.} A few interesting tidbits about this glorious beverage:

* It must be made from at least 51% corn. The black fertile land of Kentucky grows the finest corn in all of America. Sometimes the corn stalks can reach upwards of fifteen feet in height. For whatever reason the area between Lexington and Louisville produces the best tasting corn in the state.

* The aging of the bourbon must take place in freshly charred, never before used, white oak barrels.

* Bourbon can only consist of the following: corn, water, wheat or rye and malt, add anything else and you may have a good beverage, but it won’t be bourbon.

* Bourbon does not have to come from Kentucky. I was shattered when I found this out when I first started drinking around the age of 11 or so. It’s a common myth that only Bourbon County, Kentucky, the birthplace of the spirit, can produce the genuine article. In fact, you can make bourbon anywhere. Hell, even Japan is turning out some bourbons that people claim are quite good. I had some Vietnamese bourbon one night out at Little Thailand when Dick was still alive and it went down like gasoline but I thanked him for the taster.

* Jack Daniels is not bourbon. If you know this already, great, if you don’t, please refrain from calling this weird substance, bourbon.
