I’m doing a lot of legwork right now on the “Barbacoa Trail Of Austin Texas” app for iphone and android. Winnowing the list down from 50 or so places in Travis County down to a manageable ten has been part of my daily routine for the past few weeks.
With all the recent controversy over Torchy’s Tacos, I figured it would be a good idea to run by there and see about including them in the project. Torchy’s barbacoa taco is called the Democrat. It’s a plump taco, pricey at over $4, but you could deconstruct it and make two tacos out of it if you chose to do so.
It’s good. Sprinkled with Cotija cheese and white onions, it comes with a side of salsa verde and a wedge of lime. Downside? Commercial tortillas, but I doubt that’s a deal breaker for many people.
Torchy’s will never be on my permanent rotation of taquerias but as a once in a blue moon treat, it’s a fine rendition.
