Sometimes this job hits like a sledgehammer. We did not want to believe the news that broke over the weekend concerning a possible closure of the legendary downtown institution Mike’s Pub but we just drove down there and the ol gal does appear to be a goner.
We featured Mike’s Pub over a decade ago when we wrote “Insider’s Guide To Austin Texas” and stood by our words for the ten years that followed. We loved everything about Mike’s except for their mistaking Miracle Whip as an edible food substance. Years back we loved to work up a powerful appetite over coffee at Little City followed by a trencherman’s lunch of beef and fried potatoes at Mike’s joint.
House cut fries. Not the commie, frozen potatoes you get all over Austin these days at joints that could not possibly care less about their food.
A frozen schooner of Michelob, a deeply satisfying hamburger and a few volleys of conversation with the regulars always put us in a good mood.
While we’re not happy about it by any stretch of the imagination we will be following with a birth notice of whatever new restaurant springs to life in the old building.
