We must have been living under a rock a year ago when Texas Monthly threw their big barbecue party at the Long Center. It smooth skipped right by us and never garnered so much as a glance.
We were probably hunkered down at a tar paper shack out in Gonzales County eating hot guts that the pit boss’s great aunt makes from an old family recipe. At least that will be our story from here on out.
Last year’s people choice awards: Brisket
TIE: Snow’s BBQ
Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar-B-Que
Buzz on this year’s event has been light as the event has been sold out for months now. We were on the poor side when the tickets went on sale so we’ll be sitting this one out too but the lineup is a who’s who of Texas Barbecue.
Yes, there are some heavyweights missing but a good portion of the leading lights are all entered into the festivities.
It will be interesting to hear how long the lines are for Aaron Franklin’s barbecue as he’ll be surrounded by heavyweights who were on the pit when he was still peddling his bicycle and carrying a sling shot in his back pocket.
It would have been interesting to see John Mueller Barbecue included in the event as well. Could the Long Center contain the fiery tempered Mueller AND his brother Wayne? Word on the street has it that these men don’t spend a lot of their beer drinking time together singing along to David Allan Coe at the Cactus Rose out in Taylor Texas.
We’ve been hearing quite a bit on Buzzie’s out in Kerrville from our scouts of late. This could be a sleeper hit at the affair.
If you’re fortunate enough to have tickets to the affair please take a moment and post a scene report for us on this site.
