Like all Texans we have firm opinions on our state’s foods. While the debate over where to get the best kolache in the state may not rage with the same fiery intensity as brisket or Texas Red, it still burns plenty bright. We’ve circumnavigated the state and eaten thousands of kolache in our travels and while there are dozens of good sources there can be only one king and it is Weikel’s Bakery down in LaGrange.

Funny that their stiffest competition is right down the road in Ellinger at Hruska’s. Both are sublime but the slightest nod must go to Weikel’s primarily due to their achingly delicious prune, cottage cheese and apricot kolache.

Goodness, they are a Texas feast.
