When I travel far afield to a distant city for a music showcase like Ponderosa Stomp in New Orleans for example, one of my favorite things to do is go off the beaten path and hit an outlying community so that I can eat like a local. Are you in town for ACL? Then roll down to Manchaca Texas 15 minutes south of downtown Austin for as genuine a Texas barbecue experience as you’re ever likely to have

Railroad puts out good barbecue but the angle here is to get a basket of their house cut fries to go with the brisket.

They’re my favorite in the Austin area, fresh cut and fried twice.

Ambiance is stellar. Creaking hardwood floors, old building, gravel parking lot, county road….all the bellwethers are in effect.
