This summer strikes us as being particularly brutal for restaurant closures. Over on Austin’s Eater website they’re reporting the closure of Bouldin Creek neighborhood cafe Somnio’s.

We ate there once just as they opened a few years back and were unimpressed. If memory serves we had a version of carnitas that tasted of oranges. We were however struck by the hospitality as everyone in the house was beyond friendly. Somnio’s adopted the “local foods” mantra well before it came into vogue. With the hugely successful Bouldin Creek Cafe nearby perhaps the competition was just too stiff?

Bouldin Creek is about to explode this Fall with the opening of Elizabeth Street Cafe as well as John Mueller Barbecue.

Food tourists from around the state are going to descend on the little neighborhood to see how kind the 5 year layoff was to pit boss Mueller.

We’re intrigued to see what will open up in the soon to be former Somnio’s.
