Growing up on a farm in Eastern Kentucky meant developing lots of gardening skills as a kid.
Most children in Austin aren’t so lucky, which is where Urban Roots steps into the picture.
The local group recently competed against almost 300 other organizations across the U.S in a bid to capture a $2500 prize bequeathed by Green America.
They won. I like that social justice, as well as being a “green” group were both figured into the equation that led to victory.
The money will go towards purchasing seeds for future crops on Urban Root’s 3.5 acre organic farm as well as being utilized to pay allowances for their farmer’s market volunteers.
Here are a couple links for more information on both organizations.
