During the run up to the barbacoa journey to the Rio Grande Valley we discovered La Mexicana Bakery in an old issue of Southern Living magazine.
In the Deep South, Southern Living is spoken of in tones normally reserved for the King James.
It is revered.
So we made a note, rose at dawn and rolled into the little brick building in Harlingen that’s housed a bakery for over forty years.
Ran the table on the baked goods and soaked in the warm, yeasty air that all upper level bakehouses feature.
Harlingen is chock a block with little panaderias like La Mexicana but this one is something special.
Make sure you give yourself plenty time to loaf about in the building as the ancient wooden cases that hold the sweets are a sight to see.
