Joe Nick Patoski has the inside scoop on the current state of barbecue in Austin Texas.

In an article titled: “Barbecue’s New Battle Breaks Out in Austin” he reports on Franklin where “customers from as far away as China have been packing whole briskets in their luggage.”

He also checks in with John Mueller whom he quotes as saying “Dad taught me to look at the flame and go from there.” When your dad is Bobby Mueller [ 1939-2008 ] that takes on added cache as the man is renowned as being one of the true masters of the Texas tradition.

He also mentions Sam’s, the old wood frame house on East 12th street that Stevie Ray brought national acclaim to as well as Randall Stockton’s new joint Live Oak Barbecue and Beer.
