It’s with great sadness that I report the closing of the best carniceria in Austin.
La Monita had been in business since 1973. This was where the serious eaters came to buy prepared Mexican meats by the pound.
Their barbacoa was the best in Austin, an honor they shared with El Taco Rico and miles above the competition.
Walking in on a recent morning I shared conversation with the owner who was concerned for his business due to the mammoth road construction project in front of his building.
I bought my standard pound of barbacoa and half a dozen tamales and wished him the best.
It was the last time I ever saw him.
