In 1989 when Mary began waiting tables at La Reyna, South Austin looked quite a bit different than it does today.

Vegetarians did not have Bouldin Creek Cafe to indulge their wanton lifestyle. Indeed, they could normally be found at the nearby railroad tracks foraging for greens to sustain themselves.

La Reyna certainly didn’t have a gluten free menu like they do today and the building housing Once Over Coffee Bar was a motorcycle repair shop with nary a latte in sight.

La Reyna is my favorite Tex Mex restaurant in Austin. Run by there one morning and get a top flight Mexican breakfast plate and ask for Mary to be your server. Your coffee will never get below half and you’ll have a true, old school Austin dining experience.
