The legend and mystique of Sam’s Barbecue has grown immeasurably since Stevie Ray began championing this East Side house of smoked meat back in the 80’s.

I was way late, not making my first visit til 1991 but I knew right then I was in for something special.

A plastic bride and groom from atop a wedding cake were laying in the gutter outside the door the first time I called on Sam’s.

I’ll never forget that.

Although the barbecue queens Roni and Waunda have both passed, the Mays family carries on the tradition of good barbecue, friendly service and the best smoked meat prices in Austin.
